Pre-existing Disease

A pre-existing disease (PED) is any illness or condition you already have before buying the policy.

What it means

Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure or thyroid that you were diagnosed with before the policy started are covered only after a waiting period — commonly 2 to 4 years. Claim for them earlier and the insurer can decline.

Why it matters

  • The PED wait is the single most common reason early claims get rejected.
  • You must declare existing conditions honestly; hiding them can void the whole policy.
  • A shorter PED waiting period makes a plan far more useful if you already have a condition.

Practical tips

  • Declare every known condition when you buy, even if it feels minor.
  • Compare PED waiting periods — some newer plans cut them to 1 to 2 years.
  • Buying while young and healthy gets this waiting period done before you need it.
