Sum Insured
Sum insured is the most your insurer will pay towards your hospital bills in one policy year.
What it means
It is your yearly limit. If your sum insured is ₹10 lakh, that is the maximum the insurer pays across all claims in that year before any bonus or refill. Every other feature — sub-limits, co-pay, restoration — works around this number.
Why it matters
- Too low a sum insured can leave you paying a big gap on a serious hospital bill.
- Medical costs in cities rise every year, so a number that looks large today may fall short later.
- A family floater shares one sum insured across everyone, so one big claim can use most of it.
Practical tips
- For a family in a big city, many advisers suggest at least ₹10 lakh as a starting point.
- Check whether the cover is per person or shared by the whole family.
- Treat no claim bonus and restoration as ways to stretch the cover, not replace a healthy base.
